Growing up Italian, Sunday dinners were a “must attend” event for my family.
No matter what I had planned for the day – a trip to the beach, visiting a museum, going to the movies or just hanging out at a friend’s house, I knew that I had to be home, hands washed and sitting dutifully at the dinner table by 5:00 pm sharp or else!
On Sundays, my mom spent most of her day slaving away over the stove making homemade sauce, meatballs, sausages and/or braciole to serve over one gigantic bowl of pasta that our family shared at our meal.
Dinner began the moment my father sat down at the table. Then it was time to mangia é statti zitto! Which loosely translated meant it was time to shut up and eat!
Those meals were not just full of flavor, but they were full of life and are some of my favorite childhood memories.
Did you know that eighty-four percent of Italians eat at the table with family and 70 percent of Italians eat family style, compared to 31 percent of Americans who eat family style?*
Well, Sunday dinner is one Italian tradition that I have continued with own kids. I even have this sign hanging in my kitchen, to remind me of those dinners from my childhood…
Now, while I’d love to spend every Sunday in the kitchen preparing my family a big, delicious, homemade pasta meal – that isn’t always possible.
My kids always seem to have something scheduled on a Sunday – sports, playdates or birthday parties – that I’m driving them to/from. With all that activity, Sunday dinnertime sneaks up on me.
But now Bertolli Frozen Meals makes it so easy to “Mangia like an Italian” without spending hours in the kitchen with their reformulated line of authentic Italian skillet meals.
These meals are made with simple, high-quality natural ingredients and feature no preservatives, artificial flavors or colors. Even the bag is clear so you can see their pure ingredients. The new Bertolli Frozen Meals are in grocery stores nationwide and can be found in the frozen foods aisle.
So two Sundays ago, after watching my son play soccer in a game that went into overtime, I came home and took a bag of Chicken Florentine and Farfalle out of the freezer.
In less than 15 minutes I had a delicious dish of grilled chicken and pasta in a white wine sauce that was ready to take to the table.
All I had to do was empty the bag into a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat for 12 minutes and stirred occasionally.
Yummy right? It looks like I spent the afternoon slaving to make that rich and creamy sauce – the family just ate it all up!
So this past Sunday my son had another soccer game – this time he was playing in the championship (they won!). It was another LONG game. When we got home, I once again reached into the freezer for a Bertolli Frozen Meal. This time it was Chicken Marsala & Roasted Redskin Potatoes that featured white meat chicken with crimini mushrooms and green beans in a marsala wine sauce with roasted redskin potatoes.
All I had to do was toss a simple salad, and in just minutes we had a satisfying and tasty dinner!
Another great dish, right? I bet you’re hungry for a big Italian meal now. Well, you can explore more ways to Mangia for yourself by visiting Bertolli on the web and connecting with them on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.
Now it’s your turn to share. What’s your favorite Italian meal to eat?
