When I was a little girl one of my most prized possessions was a pillowcase that had a photo of Shaun Cassidy on it. Each night I would give him kiss and then lay my head next to his and have sweet dreams of my teen idol. It was just some decal that my mom found at the local variety store (do you remember those?) and ironed it onto an old pillowcase of mine, but I sure did love that pillowcase!
So when the opportunity to review Colortime Crafts and Markers came up, I opted to create some pillowcase keepsakes (minus the picture of Shaun!) with my kidlets. Colortime Crafts offers fabric markers and ready-to-color crafts projects including t-shirts, pillowcases and backpacks which lets kids color, decorate and personalize themselves.
For our review we received two 19″ X 31″ poly/cotton blend pillowcases — “Girl Power” for my daughter and “Hidden Treasures” for my son — along with four permanent fabric markers in vibrant colors. All of Colortime’s markers are non-toxic, chlorine resistant (so they won’t fade from washing) and are quick drying.
The instructions are super easy to follow. Items do not have to be pre-washed before you color them. You do though need to put a barrier between the layer you are coloring and the next surface, so the markers don’t bleed through — we wound up using a large brown paper shopping bag. Once you get that set up, the coloring fun can begin!
Though they are quick dry markers you need to let your project dry completely, about two hours, before washing – so all the colors set properly. I washed the pillowcases in a normal wash and tossed them in the dryer on a medium heat.
This was a fun and easy craft that didn’t create a big mess for this mom to clean up. The pillowcases are well made – they’re pretty durable and fit a standard-sized pillow. I liked that the markers are chunky with a large coloring tip. This made it easy for my kidlets to grip/handle and was also very forgiving in coloring large areas in no time at all. Marker residue on my kidlet’s hands washed off easily with just a little soap and water.
Colortime’s products are reasonably priced — ranging from $3.25 to 6.95 for items and markers ranging from $2.35 for one to $13.20 for a pack of six markers – making this an inexpensive craft for kids to do just for fun or in a group/birthday party setting.
