Love them or hate them, PEEPS® are one of the most iconic Easter treats ever.
PEEPS® were once simply yellow and white chick and bunny marshmallows that came in conjoined strips only at Easter time. But these cute and delightfully squishy iconic candies have been morphing and expanding beyond the Easter basket and now can be found year-round to celebrate all holidays and everyday events!
This Easter there are more than 30 varieties of PEEPS® on shelves – colorful confections ranging from bunnies to chicks and eggs in both traditional and new flavors such as sour watermelon, chocolate dipped mousse, orange delight, and party cake! I even read someplace that 1.5 billion Peeps are consumed during the Easter season, that’s certainly a lot of sweet treats!
Our Easter celebration wouldn’t be complete without PEEPS®. Instead of just sticking boxes of PEEPS® in the kids baskets this year I decided to have a little fun and tried making some hand-dipped chocolate PEEPS® pops. I was surprised how easy they were to make!
At my local craft store, I picked up my supplies of colorful paper straws, white chocolate candy melts, some open-ended cellophane bags, colorful twist ties, large pastel-colored pearlized sugar balls and I found these cute PEEPS® icing decorations.
Following the directions on the back of the candy melts, I melted the chocolate in the microwave in small batches.
I placed each PEEP® on a colorful paper straw and then dipped each one in the white chocolate, shaking off the excess and placing on a sheet of waxed paper to set. I found that opening the PEEPS® package for 10 minutes or so helped to firm up the marshmallows a bit and made it easier to place on the colorful paper straws and not melt when I dipped into the chocolate.
I used a little dab of the melted chocolate to adhere the PEEPS® icing decorations or a large pearlized sugar ball – to look like a cotton tail – to the candy pops.
Once the chocolate set, I carefully placed them in cello bags and sealed them using the colorful twist ties. Using Styrofoam as a base, I arranged them randomly in a decorative basket.
They make a cute decoration and will be a sweet Easter treat for all our family and friends who will be celebrating with us.
The rest of our Easter baskets will be filled with various flavored PEEPS® treats, a PEEPS®Rainbow Pop, MIKE AND IKE® Easter Treats, MIKE AND IKE® Jellybeans and for those who like their candy a little spicier, HOT TAMALES® Jellybeans.
