Growing up I spent all of my summers at the Jersey Shore. I don’t think there’s a better way to spend a beautiful, sunny summer day than laying out on a towel on the sand and enjoying some cool waves during the day and then walking the boards and going on amusement rides at night. To this day, every time I visit the Jersey Shore I flashback to my childhood….
I remember one summer, 1986 to be exact (boy, am I dating myself here!), I was obsessed with baseball cards. I was determined to collect every card in the Topps set that year, all 792 of them, and not by buying a factory box set, but rather by collecting individual wax packs.
It just so happened on the boardwalk there was one of those game of chance stands — you know the ones with the big wheel that spins around and you place a “bet” on a certain number to come up — that offered big boxes of all different types of candy as well as sealed boxes of Topps wax packs as prizes.
Every night I played my entire boardwalk allowance, a whopping $5, at that one stand to try to win the cards. Even my mom, dad and sister got into the act and would play the stand to help me out. There were lots of hoots and hisses over the misses and hollers and victory dances when we’d win.
Over the course of the two weeks we were vacationing there that summer I – or we, since it was a family effort, won 10 boxes of cards! And although I never completed the set that year I did wind up with two things – about 15 Don Mattingly cards that I still have and lots of priceless memories with my family.
Now when I go to the Jersey Shore, I hope to create fun family memories with my own kids.
Last week we headed down to Jenkinson’s Boardwalk at Point Pleasant Beach, NJ to spend the day and make a #JenksMemory. It was only a short one-hour car ride from our home in Northern NJ, perfect for a day trip! We serendipitously met up with friends who also happened to be visiting the beach for the day! While the kids played in the sand, digging holes and building sand castles, us adults got a chance to sit back and actually relax and take in the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean! After a full day on the beach, we all walked the boards and the kids had fun playing some games – water balloon races, ball toss and even “Whack a Mole.” Each of the kids walked away with a least one treasured prize! My daughter was the big winner that day – she came home with an armful. Her take included a green/white dog doll, a stuffed watermelon, a red and yellow striped stuffed alligator, a Minion (Kevin, I think) and a pink rubber duckie that looks like it is something out of Minecraft.
Eventually we bid adieu to our friends and my kidlets enjoyed some rides. Apparently my five-year-old daughter is becoming quite the thrill seeker. She went on Dizzy Dinosaurs, Samba Balloons, Boardwalk Bounce and the Kite Flyer, just to name a few rides…
And guess who had to go each of those rides with her because she needed to be accompanied by an adult? Yep, it was ME! We had lots of giggles and screams of joy together that day. My son and The Hubs opted for the more sedate Bumper Cars and then hit the arcade for a few claw & video games.
All in all, we had a great day of family bonding time as well as catching up with old friends. It was quite the #JenksMemory making day!
