To me burger joints are the new fro-yo or cupcake places. They’re a dime a dozen, focusing more on hype then how their food actually tastes. So to say I was a little skeptical to try The Habit Burger Grill would be a fair assessment. What could this burger place possibly offer that I haven’t eaten or seen a million times over?
In two words – great taste. In one more word – freshness.
The Habit (as its regulars call it) has been serving up its char-grilled burgers on the West Coast since 1969. It has close to 100 locations in California, Arizona and Utah and now they are hoping to spread their burger love across America. They recently opened their first East Coast location and it just so happens to be in my neck of the woods, Northern NJ.
The Habit’s philosophy for their food is pretty simple – fresh, quality ingredients offered at reasonable prices.
To them, the burger is an American icon and they don’t believe in frying icons. Instead they put it on a pedestal, by using 100% fresh ground beef and char-grilling it to order over an open flame. Then they top it with fresh-cut lettuce, ripe tomatoes, caramelized onions and melted cheese.
They serve their burgers alongside crisp French fries, onion rings, sweet potato fries or tempura battered green beans cooked in soybean oil so they’re 100% trans-fat free.
They say they do all this because they respect their customers, but also because they “respect the burger.”
But The Habit isn’t just a “burger place” – their menu features an interesting variety of fresh grilled and in-store marinated chicken and tri-tip steak sandwiches, albacore sandwiches made with line-caught tuna, vegetarian burgers and crisp salads made to order. Their kid’s meal menu features burger, chicken nuggets and grilled cheese options served with either fries, apple slices or applesauce.
I like that menu has so much variety. There is something on the menu for everyone, so the whole family can enjoy a meal out together.
Every Habit also offers a complimentary condiment bar featuring an assortment of peppers (including hot ones for the fire-breathing lover in your house), lemons, limes and a range of sauces for guests to spice it up!
Our favorites so far are:
Santa Barbara Style – That’s the burger pictured earlier in this post. It’s a double patty sandwich on toasted sourdough with mayo, avocado, tomato, lettuce, caramelized onions, pickles and cheese. I like that it’s on bread, and not a roll – which sometimes is too much for me to eat.
Veggie Burger – A grilled veggie burger on a toasted wheat bun with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onions, sprouts and topped with honey Dijon. The veggie patty was very flavorful without being too spicy and the cucumber slices gave it a nice crunch.
Onion Rings – Crunchy-battered sweet white onions, need I say more?
Tempura Green Beans – An interesting choice. Fresh-cut green beans lightly battered and flash fried to perfection. Nice way to switch up from eating plain old French fries!
Next on my list to try, one of their tasty sounding shakes and malts. YUM-O!
For all my tri-state and especially Jersey readers, you can find The Habit Burger Grill at 3101 Promenade Blvd in Fair Lawn, NJ 07410, right off of Route 208 North. It’s a new retail/restaurant area and be aware that parking is sometimes limited.
Now it’s your turn to share. What do you like to have on your burger?
