Like many other little girls out there, my daughter is obsessed with Frozen. She wants to watch it, hear it and sing the songs from the movie all the time. I can’t fault her much, because I was the very same way with another Disney movie, The Little Mermaid.
It came out while I was in high school and I remember going to the theater a bunch of times with my friends and even my mom to see it. I totally identified with Ariel – a girl who just wanted to fit in, who was curious and someone who believed that love could truly conquer all! I memorized the film and to this day, I can still sing all the songs word-for word.
So when I heard that Disney was going to issue The Legacy Collection, a series of box set compilation albums celebrating the anniversaries of 11 Disney films and the upcoming 60th anniversary of Disneyland, I hoped that The Little Mermaid would make the cut and it did! In case you didn’t know it, but the film is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
My copy of Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection: The Little Mermaid took me on a musical voyage that reminded me just how magical this film and its music are.
This is set is more than a just a basic soundtrack. It comes with two discs in a beautifully bound 20 page booklet with stunning illustrations inspired by the movie created by Lorelay Bove, a visual development artist at Walt Disney Animation Studios.
The first disc features the songs and score from the film by Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman. The second discs has 12 never-before-released demos and work tapes including songs (def check out the Ursula one) that didn’t make the final cut.
The Little Mermaid is the fourth release in The Legacy Collection joining The Lion King, Mary Poppins and Sleeping Beauty. The next release is set for later this month and it is a 4 disc set of Fantasia. Soundtracks for Pinocchio, Toy Story, Disneyland, Lady and the Tramp, Pocahontas, The Aristocats and Cinderella are set for release throughout the year.
Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection: The Little Mermaid 2-disc set is available at Disney Music Emporium or iTunes.
