How do you like to unwind after a long, tough day?
I’ve got friends who listen to music, knit, write in a journal, get a mani/pedi, go to the gym or even cook. Personally, I like to fold laundry (it’s calming, try it!) or curl up in bed and catch up on some of my favorite TV programs.
My eight-year-old son, after a long day of school, activities/sports and third-grade math homework, likes to unwind by playing video games.
You can often find him sitting intently in our living room playing various games on his Nintendo 3DS XL hand-held game system.
When I ask him why he likes to play video games, he tells me because they’re fun, of course! He also says they’re a way for him to escape and explore new worlds without ever having to leave the comfort of the couch! I never thought of it that way. He’s a pretty smart kid, right?
So when a copy of the new Nintendo game Yo-Kai Watch showed up on our doorstep, I knew I would have one very eager kid to try the game and tell mom what it’s all about.
Yo-Kai Watch is a game that features hundreds of sometimes cute, sometimes spooky, and usually mischievous Yo-Kai that inhabit our world and are the cause of the daily chaos in our lives such as forgetting your keys or running late to school.
Yo-Kai aren’t ghosts, monsters or creatures, but they’re little spirits.
The thing is, these creatures cannot be seen by the normal human eye, but they are everywhere from hiding out in trash cans, hanging out in trees and even under your bed!
Yo-Kai can only be discovered by using the Yo-Kai Watch, a magical watch that gives the player — either a little boy or a girl, if you opt for the female lead — the ability to detect the roaming Yo-Kai and communicate with them.
The goal of the game is simple, to collect as many Yo-Kai as you can. You achieve this by befriending the nice ones and have them join your team in order to help you battle the naughty ones.
My son told me that he thinks Yo-Kai Watch is a good game for young or new gamers since the premise is simple to follow but that it also a good game for more experienced gamers. He especially liked that you collect badges every time you befriended a new Yo-Kai, he liked seeing all the ones he collected.
Apparently Yo-Kai Watch is a big seller in Japan where it’s sold millions of copies of the game, and even spawned an animated TV series, a movie and comics! It’s pretty easy to see why, the game is addicting to play and the manga anime is so detailed that it really does come to life and in 3D, if you have the Nintendo 3DS XL like my son.
Yo-Kai Watch is now available in the US for Nintendo’s 2DS, 3DS and 3DS XL game systems both online and wherever video games are sold. The game retails for $39.99.
