When I was little, I used to love imaginative play, and one of my favorite things to do was to host a tea party!
First I would line up my stuffed animals and/or dolls up on the floor. My parties were pretty exclusive; I’d only choose my top three of four from the ones I had. Next, I’d lay out a little blanket or towel as our tablecloth. Finally, I would use some of my mom’s old dishes and cups, so each “guest” had their own place setting. Sometimes I would get “fancy” and grab napkins from the kitchen and fold them into little triangles to place on their plates so my guests wouldn’t make a mess.
I don’t think we ever actually ate any real food or drank tea, but there were lots of imaginary scrumptious delights to choose from. Then I’d sit with my guests, and we’d have lots of gossipy conversations, such as:
- “Did you see that Rub-A-Dub Dolly went on a date with Snoopy?”
- “Did you see Barbie’s new outfit, isn’t it gorgeous!”
- “Can you believe that my mom made me eat broccoli at dinner last night?”
So when my daughter got a tea set from one her besties for her birthday a few years ago, I think I was more excited than she was, because I knew of all fun that was in store! Happily, my daughter has come to loving tea parties as much as I did as a child. Sometimes I’m lucky enough to get an invitation to one of hers!
Hosting a tea party with the dolls or stuffed animals in your house is always a fun way to pass an afternoon. Here are five easy steps to host your own tea party:
Step One – Get your tea set. If you have a child tea set like my daughter, great, but you can totally improvise like I did when I was a child. I used old, mismatched dishes and cups my mom kept in the spare cupboard – so apparently I was shabby chic before there even was shabby chic!
Step Two – Set your table. You can use a kitchen towel, a beach blanket or even a scrap piece of material as a tablecloth. Does your party have a theme? Add some decorations, toys or even flowers that highlight that theme. This past weekend we had a tea party this past weekend that was in celebration of the big football game that took place on Sunday. We used a bright blue piece of felt, football napkins and even used a football as a table decoration.
Step Three – Invite your guests. They can be dolls, stuffed animals, super hero figures, pets or even people. It’s their party, so let your child invite who they want. My daughter invited her two doll besties to partake in the football-themed tea party festivities – sadly, I was only invited to act as the official photographer of the event. I like that she had them dress the part, the dolls in their cheerleading outfits and my daughter wore her favorite team jersey!
Step Four – Get your refreshments. What good is a tea party without some yummy food and drink! Tea isn’t usually big with the elementary school crowd, so we use apple juice instead. For the eats, since my daughter is a true chocoholic I thought that Entenmann’s® Little Bites® Chocolate Party Cakes, complete with rainbow sprinkles, would be perfect. These cakes are the latest edition to Entenmann’s® Seasonal Favorites line. I like that they are made with real ingredients contain no high fructose corn syrup, and each party cake packet is less than 200 calories! They’re only available for a limited time – until May 2017.
Step Five – Enjoy! Let the tea party celebration begin – enjoy some sips of your favorite beverage, nosh on some yummy snacks and enjoy the time with your guests!
