After a busy week at school and work, kid movie nights are a time for the kids to kick back, relax and unwind. While I’d love to be able to take the kids out to the movies each week, it would be a big stress on my pocketbook. Between the cost of tickets and then getting food/snacks and drinks, I could be in for more than $100. Yikes!
So unless there is a “must-see” movie out there – we do most of our movie nights from the comfort of our family room!
Here are some of my tips for making any kid movie night at home a success:
Schedule it – It’s hard to plan a fun movie night on the fly. Make kid movie night a regular “‘thing” in your family’s schedule by picking a set day and time. Check your calendar to avoid any existing activity, practice or event conflicts. With young children, aim to schedule it earlier in the evening, so they can enjoy before bedtime and not fall asleep during the film. Choose a comfortable location like a living or family room and make it extra cozy with pillows/cushions and blankets.
Select your movie – Always keep in mind the ages and likes/dislikes of your children when deciding on a film. Find a movie that you think will appeal to them and not scare or bore them. Don’t pick a musical if your kids don’t like singing or dancing and prefer animated or action-adventure flicks.
Decide on a theme – Once you’ve selected your movie, ratchet your kid movie night up a few notches by building a theme around it. Themes are a great way to bring a movie to life, and it doesn’t take as much planning as you would think. Consider a few games, activities and even décor to set the mood. With a quick Google search, you can find printable activities such as coloring sheets, puzzles and even crafts related to almost any type of movie or theme.
Plan your menu – Get creative and plan a menu that reflects the theme of the film you are watching. You can be as simple or as elaborate as you want it to be. Create a snack, dessert or even a drink/smoothie that ties into your movie or theme.
For our latest kid movie night, I surprised my kids with an “Ice Age: Collision Course” themed night!
Since the movie takes place during the Ice Age, I thought a chilly, blue décor would be fun. At my local dollar store, I picked up a blue tablecloth, plates, and crazy drink bottles.
This was going to be a dinner kid movie night – so it was only appropriate that I picked food that was frozen to fit in with my Ice Age theme! Kidfresh meals are so easy to make, and my kids love eating them, so it was a no-brainer to combine the movie and the meal together!
You can always find Kidfresh products in my freezer! Why I like Kidfresh so much is that that they are healthy frozen kids meals! Kidfresh meals contain all non-GMO ingredients and have hidden veggies such as carrots, cauliflower, pumpkin, butternut squash and chickpeas in every meal, up to ½ a cup!
There are all sorts of Kidfresh options to choose from including multi-serve meals like Fun-omenal Chicken Sticks, Mighty Meaty Chicken Meatballs, Mamma Mia Cheesy Pizza, Fun-tastic Fish Sticks, Super Duper Chicken Nuggets and Little Jammin Chicken Sliders; single serve meals including Wagon Wheels Mac + Cheese, Easy Cheesy Ravioli, Rainbow Rice + Chicken and Totally Twisted Pasta + Meatballs and side/snack dishes Totally Rockin’ Tots, SuperBlastin (Pizza) Bites
I also like that Kidfresh doesn’t include artificial flavors or ingredient and no synthetic colors or preservatives. Even their packaging is eco-friendly! Food comes in BPA-free trays, and all of their packaging is recyclable.
For our #KidfreshIceAge, movie night my son wanted the Muy Cheesy Quesadillas while my daughter opted for the Spaghetti Loops + Meat Sauce. I served their meals with a little added extra mixed veggies on the side – so my kids ate almost two full servings vegetables, YAY!
To make things a little extra special I had a fun way of revealing the movie selection to my kids, experimenting with a little dry ice. Check out the video and their reaction:
