At this time of year, there is no shortage of gift options out there to choose from. The trick though is to find the right gift, for the right person.
My favorite gifting option during the holidays is to give a gift basket. Gift baskets are one of those universal gift ideas that you can make for anybody — close family and friends, for teachers and neighbors. They not only work for holidays, but for other occasions as well such as a birthday, teacher appreciation, a house-warming party, a baby shower, or even a new job.
The key to making the perfect gift basket is by adding a personal touch. You should tailor your basket to the particular interests of or to a special event in the life of the person you’re giving it to so it’s not only a gift they’ll enjoy but also find useful and thoughtful.
Here’s how I made a holiday gift basket for a friend in four easy steps:
Step 1 – Gather your gift contents. I think theming a gift basket works best. It not only gives the basket a cohesive look, but a personally curated feel rather than a random mish-mash of items.
Ask yourself, “What does the person like?” “What are their interests?” Once you decide on a theme, you can choose appropriate items to include in the gift basket.
Tip #1: Look for both large and small items and even seek out quirky ones that can add some flair to your theme.
The person receiving my gift basket loves cars, so I decided on a car spa theme and headed over to the Walmart to find my gifts.
I started out in the Automotive department. To keep the car looking brand new, I picked up some cleaning items — a microfiber sponge mitt, a tire scrub brush, a pack of microfiber cloths and leather interior cleaning cloths.
For a little bit of car bling, I chose a fancy steering wheel cover, a decorative license plate holder, a coffee tumbler along with an LED key chain flashlight.
Finally, I headed over to the Air Care department and picked up some Yankee Candle® brand On The Go fragrances to add to my gift basket.
Yankee Candle® brand products are a fun and ingenious way to neutralize unpleasant odors and freshen the air for up to four weeks in small spaces, such as a car. They had a wide variety of fragrances to choose from, and I ultimately picked three of them – each under $5 – to include in my gift basket.
To celebrate the season, I selected a Balsam & Cedar Car Jar® Ultimate and paired it with a Clean Cotton® one for use once the holidays have ended. The Car Jar® Ultimate fragrance is specifically formulated to shrink as it’s used, so you’ll know when it’s time to replace. When the fragrance gets below the label, you know it’s for a new one. They are perfect to hang from the review mirror of a car.
I also included a MidSummer’s Night® Smart Scent™ Vent Clip. The Smart Scent Vent™ Clips have a clear window so you can easily see when a replacement is due. It fastens easily to a car’s dash vents. It releases its fragrance as air flows through the vents. You can adjust the strength of the fragrance by following the user instructions on the packaging and moving the slider on the back of the clip.
Step 2 – Find a container. Baskets are the obvious choice here because it is after all called a GIFT BASKET, but you can certainly get creative here. Depending upon your theme, you could use a bucket, a mixing bowl, a wooden crate, a terra cotta pot or even upcycle an old tin.
You should base the size of your container on the size and amount of contents you’ll be including in your gift. You don’t want to choose a container that’s too small because you won’t be able to make everything fit. If it’s too large, your gift items will appear skimpy.
To keep in line with my car spa theme, I chose a medium-sized blue bucket to place all my items in.
Step 3 – Load your container. Fill the bottom of your basket or container with some scrunched up tissue paper or decorative filler so your gift items have something to rest on. Next take your large and tall items and place them in the back of the container. Arrange the rest of your items from front to back with the smallest items in the very front. You add visual interest by tilting your items or placing them in the container at an angle.
Tip #2: Use tape or glue to help secure your items when tilting or angling in the container. Also, if it’s a deep container, you may want to use an old empty box in the base to help prop your items up so they can be seen.
It took a few tries to fit everything in an interesting arrangement since I had some large and oddly shaped items. I underestimated the amount of tissue paper and filler I needed to keep my items elevated.
Step 4 – Wrap your container. Cellophane gift wrap works best, in either clear or lightly tinted hues, so you can showcase the items in your gift basket.
You can find cellophane bags in various sizes at most craft stores. Place the container in the center of the bag, with the cellophane bag seal sitting under the bottom of the basket. Pull cellophane bag up around the container and secure at the top with a twist-tie, rubber band or tape. Decorate with ribbon.
Tip #3: If you’re not able to find a bag, you can use two pieces of cellophane from a roll. Cut two large sheets and create an “X” with them, place container in the middle of the X and pull up the cellophane around the container and secure at the top with a twist-tie, rubber band or tape. Decorate with ribbon.
Here’s how my gift basket turned out. I added a holiday ornament to make my gift basket a little more festive.
This wasn’t an expensive or difficult gift basket to put together. I think this car spa gift basket will be a big hit with my friend! What do you think?
Now it’s your turn to share. Check out the Walmart assortment page and tell me what Yankee Candle® brand fragrance is your favorite.
