Counting is a huge milestone for any child as they are starting to learn and grow. Now counting to 10 is “easy breezy,” according to my five-year-old kindergartener son, but what about counting to 30, 50, 80 or even 100? Aside from learning how to count by 1s, my boy is also learning how to count by 5s and 10s all the way to 100. Sometimes he gets confused trying to remember how the larger numbers progress so I’m always looking new ways to help him to practice his numbers.
There are ten full color spreads in the book, each featuring fun scenes such as the deep blue sea, a shady forest, a vegetable garden, a busy city, the beach, a dessert shop and a classroom. As children turn the pages they find two groups of five flaps to turn. Each flap reveals a new image of an item that you’d typically find in the scene along with the next number in the count up to 100. At the end of each stack of flaps, counters are cheered and encouraged in their counting progress.
Even my three-year-old daughter loves to sit down with this book and “count” with me and my son. While my son does the counting, she shouts out the word of each flap picture – helping to strengthen her vocabulary! My son also likes to read the book backwards, counting down from 100 to 1, just to change things up a bit.
