Today The Hubs aka Tyler is filling in with a post about his childhood Star Wars memories and some new games from Hasbro tied to The Force Awakens which comes out next month. Take it away Tyler…..
There’s a new Star Wars movie coming out…
Hello? How could anyone NOT know at this point! It has to be the most anticipated movie release EVER. My own kidlets certainly are buzzed about seeing it – our tickets are already in hand. We’re going with our extended family (Nana, aunt & uncle) the day after Christmas and even seeing it in IMAX 3D!
Until then, it’s going to be a LONG 6 weeks in our house!
I remember back when the first movie came out in 1977 — Episode 4, although it wasn’t called that back then — and it was playing four times a day at the movie theater in my hometown in Colorado. My friend Kevin and I would spend all weekend at the theater watching it, racking up views in a kind of strange childhood competition. I think we must have seen Star Wars over 100 times by the end of its first run!
But when you are a kid, watching a movie is never enough. You want toys, games and figures to play out your fantasies of the movie! Way back then I had to settle for a MARVEL comic, a couple of magazines, a set of beautiful production drawings and Star Wars blueprints — seriously, what was I going to do with those unless I was a budding Sith Lord?
I know it’s hard to believe, but there wasn’t a single Star Wars toy to be had when the movie first came out, or for even a long time after. That Christmas my present was this Star Wars Early Bird Certificate, which promised me four action figures that I would actually get sometime that next spring!
Well, luckily for my kids, they have a lot more options than a cardboard IOU.
To be honest, it can be a bit overwhelming at how many things are out there, and for any and all ages of Star Wars fans. There are action figures, space ships, light sabers, dolls, video games and even your very own remote-controlled droid!
But if you have a Family Game Night, like mine does, there are three new Star Wars games made by Hasbro that in my opinion are out-of-this-world and really worth seeking out. They are a blast to play if you are a casual fan, hard-core Star Wars nerd or if you’d like to forget about Jar Jar Binks!
Star Wars Loopin’ Chewie was the game my two kidlets demanded we play first. Even the box made my daughter laugh!
It’s an update of an old classic you may have already played, Loopin’ Louie. The gameplay is pretty simple – Chewbacca flies around in the Millennium Falcon and tries to knock away your Stormtroopers. Each player gets three Stormtrooper coins that stick out of a slot that you need to protect from Chewie with a paddle and the player with the last Stormtrooper coin standing wins!
I was surprised at how challenging of a game it was to play. Meaning, just because you are a parent, don’t expect that you are going to win all the time! It takes timing, skill, and a lot of concentration but even a 4 year-old can master it easily. Since we have two kidlets, it’s great to have a three-player game to play. Two can play it as well, but one player will definitely have an advantage. Even though, I still managed to lose to my son!
When we play it can get pretty noisy with all the smashing and laughing but we’ve actually played it every day since it arrived, so you can say it is a bona-fide hit in our house!
Next up was Electronic Catch Phrase: Star Wars Edition Game. You may already own Hasbo’s regular version of Catch Phrase, and this is the same basic electronic game geared towards Star Wars fans. You split into two teams and try to guess a series of words and phrases before your time runs out-which is when Chewbacca growls. You have to think fast and have a pretty good knowledge of the entire Star Wars franchise to win!
You can play at two levels: Apprentice or Jedi Master. I’m no Yoda, but fancied myself pretty knowledgeable about the Star Wars universe. But again, I was no match for my son (don’t worry, there is no Darth vs. Luke drama playing out here-yet). You have to really know your stuff to give and get clues if you want to win.
I think the older you are, the more fun Star Wars Catch Phrase is. Since my six-year-old daughter can’t read much, she could only help with answers, but she still had fun guessing and helping Mommy’s team! Plus the game is in the shape of a mini Millennium Falcon, which is pretty cool itself.
Last up is another variation on a Hasbro electronic game classic, Bop It R2-D2!
It’s pretty easy to play. You just follow C-3PO’s directions on what to do to poor R2-D2. The droid commands you to “Bop it!” (his head), “Twist it!” (his head) or “Pull it!” (his legs). You keep at it until you mess up.
Simple, you think?
Well, you better have good concentration, good recall, quick skills, and dexterity if you want to rack up a high score. I maxed out around 24, so my wife and my son both have me beat, although I am determined to get over 50 points and show them!
More than one player can also play Bop It! as a pass-around game. You have to react fast or you might miss C-3PO’s commands and be out.
There are so many toy and game options for Star Wars fans this holiday season – but if your kids really love games and Star Wars you can’t go wrong with any or all three of these games from Hasbro!
