When my son was three all he ever wanted to watch was this kiddie DVD we had called “Lots and Lots of Trucks.” As the title implies, it featured all sorts of trucks that could amuse a little kid for a full 45 minutes – fire trucks, dump trucks, big rigs, construction trucks and heavy haulers, you name the type of truck it was included in this video. Out of all those trucks, my son’s favorite part was when Bigfoot came on. Who is he? I’m not talking about the big hairy Sasquatch that people (crazy ones!) claim to have either seen or captured. This Bigfoot is sort of the granddaddy of monster trucks who raced, jumped and crushed cars.
That was the start of my son’s love affair with monster trucks and how we soon discovered Monster Jam®. He’s six now, but he still loves it. He’s got a whole bin full of Hot Wheels Monster Jam trucks that he and now his four-year-old sister share and play with regularly. Some of our favorite ones to race around in crazy competitions are El Toro Loco®, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Monster Mutt, Captains Curse® and Grave Digger®.
Playing with these toys is one thing, but seeing a Monster Jam truck up close and personal is really something else! Monster Jam trucks stand 12 feet tall and about 12 feet wide. Each one is a custom designed machine that sits atop 66-inch tall ties and weigh a minimum of 10,000 pounds. Built for short, high-powered bursts of speed, Monster Jam trucks are capable of speeds of up to 100 miles and hour and can fly up to 130 feet (a distance that’s greater than 14 cars side-by-side!) and up to 35 feet in the air. That’s pretty impressive!
