My son is turning into quite the artist.
He’s always enjoyed coloring, as evidenced by the five million coloring books found scattered around our home, but in the past year he started to branch out and create his own pictures. Like any good artist he says, he first has to sketch out his creation in pencil, in case of any mistakes. Then he colors it in using markers, colored pencils or his preferred tool of choice, crayons.
Not only am I a great admirer of his work, but I also love the stories behind each piece of art he’s created. Sometimes they are as simple as why he used a certain colors, while other times they are tales of wild adventures or futuristic creatures. As you see, his freehand technique is simple, lots of scratchy lines and bright colors. Who knows, maybe I have the next Basquiat on my hands!
The Hubs and I hope that our son will always have an interest in and an appreciation of art. We’re always on the lookout for new and different art supplies and materials to keep encouraging his creativity and we were happy to try and review one a SuperCool Art Kit from Super Cool Art.
SuperCool Art Kits are complete, fun, educational art kits for aspiring artists’ of all ages. They are designed to teach color theory, scale, composition and proportion with the help of themed stencils. The stencils give young artists with the basis and inspiration to compose their very own “one-of-a-kind” masterpiece.
We tried out the “A Night In Space” Super Deluxe kit which offered my budding artist an opportunity to share his dream of being in space – whether it be piloting a spaceship, floating around with aliens or exploring other planets and galaxies.
The kit arrived in a cool tube and included everything my son needed to create an “out of this world” (sorry, I couldn’t resist) masterpiece.
It included three 19” x 25” cotton drawing sheets, a pack of 12 woodless graphite color pencils, a Kneadable eraser, a graphite color pencil eraser called a “Magic” eraser, a two-holed pencil sharpener and two space themed stencils made from non-toxic sheets of recycled polypropylene plastic. There were also two organic lollipops thrown in as an extra treat for my little artist!

If you don’t know how to get started in creating your masterpiece you can check out the “Lessons” section that Super Cool Art offers on their site. There are a series of instructional pieces that teach you how to use the stencils and where you can also learn the basic principles of art such as — and this is what I got from the videos — the “Rule of Thirds” (composition), “Rule of Odds” (deciding on how many items/subjects in your piece) and the “Golden Ratio” (proportion).
My son told me he didn’t need to see the tutorials and he wanted to dive right in. As he told me, he knows what he likes and doesn’t like – which, when it comes to art, is pretty spot on for lots of people I guess. To him, more is more as you can see:
If you have a little artist on your gift list this holiday season you should check SuperCool Art out. They offer both drawing and painting kits, and a variety of themed stencils for boys and girls including space, fairies, dinosaurs, underwater adventures, zoo animals and abstract art. Drawing kits range from $34.95 -$44.95 and painting kits from $49.95 to $69.95. You can also purchase the stencils themselves for $19.95 a sheet.
Now it’s your turn to share. What is your favorite thing to draw or doodle?
