Look out! Zap! Pow! Whoosh! Whether it’s cartoons, movies, and toys, toys and more toys, everywhere you look in our house it’s clear that we’ve been invaded by super heroes! In fact, we have so many colorful caped crusaders hanging around that if I didn’t know better, I’d suspect that The Hubs was a secret super villain in disguise!
The most popular super hero around here is Captain America, the iconic patriotic Star-Spangled Avenger. My daughter not only has several t-shirts featuring Cap and his shield, it’s nearly impossible to get her Captain America doll out of her hands! Not only does he spend a lot of time with his crime-fighting super buddies including Iron Man, Spider Man and Wolverine, but he also seems to hang out a lot with the cast of “Frozen”—personally, I think he’s got a secret crush on Elsa!
To surprise my daughter, we had a family movie night to watch Captain America: Winter Soldier which just came out on Blu-ray/DVD. For our movie treat, I served up a delicious M&M® inspired treat, because you know, #HeroesEatMMs.
My Captain America Popcorn Candy Balls combines the super hero power tastes of salty popcorn with the sweetness of M&Ms. I headed over to Walmart with Captain America’s #1 fan –aka my daughter – to gather up my supplies. She even dressed the part!
Once I got home with my M&Ms and other ingredients, here’s how I made them:
Captain America Popcorn Candy Balls
Prep Time: 10 minutes (mostly to pop the popcorn)
Cook Time: 20 minutes
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) of butter or margarine
1 10 oz bag of large marshmallows (40 count)
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp salt
12 cups popped popcorn
1/2 cup red M&Ms
1/2 cup blue M&Ms
1 – In a large saucepan place butter, marshmallows, vanilla and salt and cook on low heat until marshmallows are completely melted, about 5-7 minutes.
2 – Pour marshmallow mixture over popped popcorn and mix lightly to coat.
3 – Add red & blue M&Ms and carefully incorporate them into popcorn/marshmallow mixture.
3 – Shape into balls and place on cookie sheet lined with wax or parchment paper and let stand until firm about 10 minutes.
A few prep tips. This recipe works best if you make your own popcorn from either an air popper or in a pot with some hot oil. The microwave kind doesn’t work so well because they’re flavored with butter or other seasonings. It also looks better (for the red, white and blue aspect of this treat) f you can find white kernel corns instead of yellow. Spray a little PAM on your hands before you start forming the balls, so the mixture won’t stick to your hands.
Right now, if you head over to Walmart.com you can take advantage of a special coupon where you can save $5 when your purchase any two M&M Brand Chocolate Candies and Captain America: The Winter Solider on DVD. It’s a great savings. I know because I took advantage of it myself.
Have you ever wonder which super hero or M&M you’re secretly harboring inside of you? If so, you should head over to heroeseatmms.com to take a fun quiz to find out who you’d be. It turns out I am The Hulk. My daughter? Captain America of course!
While you’re there you can also enter to win a $100 Walmart gift card. You could pick up a lot of Superhero swag with that prize, including a copy of the new Captain America DVD.
Now it’s your turn to share. Who is your favorite super hero and why?
