Disclosure: I received Disney Channel “Teen Beach Movie” products in exchange for a post about the film. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
As hokey as it may sound, I genuinely like watching beach movies from the 1960s. What I like about movies such as “Beach Blanket Bingo,” “ Surf Party” and “Ride the Wild Surf” is that they are such throw-backs to the era – cute surfer dudes, beach bunnies, rock ‘n roll and lots good, clean fun! The surfing was always big and the spontaneous dancing/singing was just a typical day at the beach.
Now the Disney Channel is dragging out the old beach blanket and shaking off the sand for a modern musical twist this summer with “Teen Beach Movie” that premieres on Friday, July 19 at 8 PM, ET/PT.
Similar in style to “High School Musical” and “Camp Rock,” Disney Channel’s “Teen Beach Movie” is a breezy surf-rock musical comedy that will get the family dancing and singing. It’s a perfect flick for a family movie night.
“Teen Beach Movie” stars Ross Lynch (Disney Channel’s “Austin and Aly”), and Maia Mitchel (ABC Family’s “The Fosters”) as teen surfing sweethearts Brady and McKenzie. Together they ride one last wave of summer and mysteriously get transported into a classic beach party movie “Wet Side Story.” There it’s the surfers versus the bikers for control of the local beach hangout. Brady and McKenzie try to return to the present day, but their lives may be changed forever when they inadvertently alter the movie’s romantic star-crossed lovers storyline when the movie’s leads fall in love with each of them.
We had one big surf party with the “Teen Beach Movie” gift pack we received from the Disney Channel. It helped us kick off our first family movie night of the summer. We decided on beach-themed movie and kept it all in the Disney family by watching “Lilo & Stitch.”
The kidlets got into the spirit of things by dressing beach-y, covering themselves in beach-themed temporary tattoos and surfing in the family room….
A little surfin’ safari in the family room
To make our party complete I headed over to the official “Teen Beach Movie” website for an online party kit that includes ideas for beach-inspired games, decorations and recipes – plus some sneak peek, behind-the-scenes and music video clips.
I’m not a dessert maker (I’m more a dessert buyer), but I even made a Surf’s Up! cake from the easy instructions I found on the site. Here’s mine, with a few variations — yes, those are Swedish Fish.
So make sure you don’t miss it, we’ll be tuning in to Disney Channel on Friday, July 19 at 8 PM, ET/PT for the premiere of “Teen Beach Movie” and get our summer groove on!
Now it’s your turn to share? What’s your favorite summer or beach-themed movie?
